Today's Iris is Much More than a "Flag"

My father-in-law disliked what he called "flags," and others called (bearded) iris.  The old bearded iris didn't have much variety---blue(purple) was the primary choice.  But bearded iris now are available in basically all colors but true red.  My recent visit to a relative's iris garden was delightful, but I was especially taken by the masses of blooms in the first two photos below.  I love purple and white, especially with speckles and ruffles.  (Edited in RadLab and TopazAdjust)

Top right....as close to black as an iris will get.

Just gorgeous! I really like the pale pink and the golden colored ones! My irises are the traditional dark purple. :)

that must've been a most enjoyable visit to see en masse the lovely irises in flower. Like the collage effect and the one with the deep burgundy lower petal and white top. Oh and the soft pink one, especially.
