Turkeys Trotting

In 1975, the Rio Grande subspecies of wild turkey was introduced in southwestern Oregon.  Now the turkeys have spread to most of the state, with the number estimated to be 50,000 birds as of a year ago. Our corner of the state became turkey country a few years ago and they have thrived.  We used to be excited to see them in the wild; now they have become a town pest, right along with the deer.   They are noisy, messy, and they are destructive to gardens.

The morning I was trying to locate elk to photograph, I was alone on a country road right at sunrise.  What a frightful noise!  The turkeys roost in trees at night and come down in the mornings, trooping in flocks to find food.  That particular morning, their goal was the field of harvested sunflowers.  I'm linking up with Nancy's Rural Thursday.

Beautiful photo, despite their peskiness; which I didn't realize they could be. We had a large flock of them last year but I was like a little kid, all excited to have wild turkeys in the yard :)

Sounds like you had quite an adventure. Great capture, the light is wonderful.
They say we have turkeys over on this side of the mountains, but I can't remember seeing any. Maybe they don't like soggy weather.

Oh my, sometimes I think we really shouldn't mess with Mother Nature. Nice shot! - Thanksgiving dinner? ;-)

i guess in large flocks, they'd be a bother. i'd love to see some here, though. :)

We have a few wild turkeys that have taken up residence here -- always nice to see. Lovely photo.

It definitely is turkey season. As I drove down the driveway at House #2 the other day, I counted 30 of them in the field.

Wonderful light, and beautiful framing here!
