The Beginning of Mountain Winter

The summit of the Blue Mountains in Union County is the best place for winter photos.  As of now, there is only 3 feet of snow, but more is on the way.  Today, there are wind gust of 50 mph; fortunately, we have very little snow in the valley because it would be a real mess.

Highway 204 is an Oregon state highway across the Blues (I-84 is further south, but essentially parallel). We call it the Tollgate Highway, because Tollgate is the location of a little store and many cabins.   (This is the beginning of snow photos, I hope.)

Across the mountains, there is only one clear view (from the highway) of the Umatilla Canyon. (The snow in the foreground is piled against the guardrail.

Cross-country skiers have a variety of locations among the timber.

Woodland SnoPark is a good place to make a short loop and view some of the open ski and snowmobile areas.
